For the rest of us, as you should probably guess from the title of this article, we're talking about Domain Authority (DA).

Why do some people think DA is a ranking factor?

First things first: Domain Authority is a Moz metric.This is a score ranging from 0-100.

Since Moz released DA, it has caused confusion in the SEO industry.

Domain Authority is compared to and confused with Google's PageRank - specifically the retired Toolbar PageRank.Sometimes, DA is even incorrectly referred to as a "Google metric".

Some SEO gurus see DA as the golden ticket to Google's algorithm.It's a promise to improve your rankings by opening the door to how search engines rank your site.

Before continuing, we need to make an important distinction.

There are two types of "domain authority".

We have already discussed Domain Authority or DA, Moz metrics.

But there is also the concept of domain authority.

Basically, the idea is that Google gives some domains more authority – and you can build authority over time for the domain by publishing things like posting great content and attracting high-quality links.

All of this gives certain sites an inherent ranking advantage in the SERPs.

In the simplest terms, this would explain why sites like The New York Times easily rank No. 1, while Joe's News Blog, which launched last month, is much more difficult.

Before we explore the Moz team about domain authority, it's important to understand the basics.

What is domain authority?

Moz's website states::

"Domain Authority (DA) is a search engine ranking score developed by Moz to predict the likelihood of a website ranking in a search engine results page (SERP).Domain Authority scores range from 1 to 100, with higher scores being more likely to rank.

Domain Authority is based on data from our Link Explorer web index and uses dozens of factors in the calculation.The actual domain authority calculation itself uses a machine learning model to predictively find a 'best fit' algorithm that most closely correlates our link data to the ranking of thousands of actual search results, which we use as Extended standard.

Are Domain Authority and Domain Rating the same?

To be fair, Moz isn't the only SEO tool to come up with its own search engine algorithm metrics.

After Moz led the way, other SEO tools followed.

Semrush has an authority score.

Ahrefs has Ahrefs Rank.

This is where the domain rating comes in.Ahrefs used to call Ahrefs Rank a "domain rating."In 2018, Ahrefs improved the formula and changed the name to Ahrefs Rank.

Ahrefs originally only used the formula for backlinks.

In contrast, Domain Authority represents your entire Onsite and Offsite SEO efforts.

No, domain authority is not a ranking factor.

To be clear, Moz came out to clarify this, confirming:

"Domain Authority is not a Google ranking factor and has no impact on the SERPs.

So what is a domain authority?

This is a way of measuring the performance of a website.If your SEO strategy follows best practices, you should use it to provide an idea.

Domain Authority as a Ranking Signal: Our Verdict

Domain authority is just one metric that can be used to compare your site to your competitors' sites.

Don't get addicted to it.In fact, you can safely ignore it if you want.

If your domain authority drops, it doesn't necessarily mean your Google rankings will drop.

But most importantly, like BBB ratings, it doesn't make sense for Google to use metrics created by third parties to help rank its search results.
